Remember "the Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) haircut" that everyone wanted?

Well, last night I was watching TV with hubby when I just could NOT stand my hair one second longer.  I was inspired by Lily on Cold Case and to the scissors I bolted.  Standing over the sink with hair cascading down in layers onto the counter I wondered if I would regret this decison tomorrow, so -- like any smart woman on a mission-- I impulsively cut my once swoopey side bangs into definite bangs before I had the chance to reconsider.

Danny said that he bet this would result in an emergency hairdresser appointment BUT I like it!  Being the ever observant man he is, he said he couldn't tell any difference.  Thus, I went back and cut MORE and this time added a few layers, again -- very swiftly.

Much to my surprise, I see THIS this morning and realize I have the IN haircut of the moment.  It's "the Kate". I probably don't need to state that this is the ONLY physical thing I have in common with Kate Moss, sadly enough.  Of course, by the time you get to the end of this post, my trendy late night home cut might be soooo last week. ;0)  But hey!  Good hair is hard to find!

Today...

it was raining.  No, it was flash-flooding with poor visibility. Monday mornings are one of THE worst days to get up motivated enough to make the long commute to work and put on a bright smiling face no matter what you feel like.  I had a cup of coffee in my hand, my purse on my shoulder and an umbrella over my head as I ran to the car.

I opened the door and as I tried to negotiate getting in the car and closing both the umbrella and the door, I felt COLD water running down my back off of the umbrella and then I felt WARM moisture down my left arm.  Yuck!  I smelled my coffee creamer on  my sleeve.  Yep, I had spilled hot coffee down my arm.  I was hoping my co-workers realize that Hazelnut creamer is not my new signature fragrance because I didn't  have the time to go back in through the pouring rain and grab another shirt. 

Once in the car, I look out the windshield at the sheets of torrential rain pouring down.  I begin blotting the coffee off my arm.  Looking in the rear-view mirror, I catch sight of the tired eyes looking back at me and see my now once lovely but now wet hair-do. 

I put on the brake to start the car and feel the wet heaviness of the bottom of my pants on my shin.  Going to be a great day, I can tell.  I turn on the radio and the one song that makes me pine for my Dad is on.

(In case you are wondering, the title of the song is "I can only imagine" by Mercy Me.  The song was sung at my Dad's funeral and if you were there, you would NEVER forget the chills that were sent down your back as the duet sang it standing over the casket of my Dad.)

I can't remember EVER hearing my Dad complain about his jobs.  Why should I?

I sit back and listen to the words and turn it around and realize that I am here, he is in my heart, and my day will go on with or without the rain. I have a choice to let environmental factors effect the disposition of my day or not.

I tried to call home on my cell phone and tell my family that I loved them and that I hope they, too, have a wonderfully rainy day for after the rain there is always the promise of the rainbow. They were busy getting ready so I smiled in spite of myself and the weather and sang that song to the top of my lungs.

Lunch time!

One day last week I had a special lunch with my Mom.  Let me set the stage by saying that I work 15 minutes away from our lunch destination and our lunch date was for 12:15.

The dialogue from her phone call promptly at 12:00 noon went as follows:

Mom: Where are you?!

ME: Umm, I was just about to leave. 

Mom: We were supposed to meet at 12:15...

ME: And it's 12:00

Mom: Well, when are you leaving??

ME: Right now, but it only takes me 15 minutes to get there.

Mom: Well, I thought we were supposed to meet at 12:15.

ME: We are, it's 12:00

Mom:.....

ME: Hello?

Mom: It's 12:02 now.

ME: Umm, okay I'm on my way.

Mom: Well, I'm already here so hurry up.  I'll order for you.

Guess what time I got there?  Yep. 12:17. Gotta love her!

Balance is not an act

I started a new job recently. 

I started a new personal status recently.  I am still reeling from not having my father here with me.  I started some enrichment classes for important areas in my life. I've made some new relationships. 

In a way, I am starting over in many areas.  I feel like I can redefine myself.  At this point, my life is what I can make of it.

In this new job I was interviewing for, the administrator walked in the interview after it had already begun with 2 other people and heard me saying I had a degree in social work and that as a young college student I wanted to save the world.  He proceeded to sit down and ask me if I had accomplished this yet.

I told him no, but that hadn't stopped me from trying... 

I want to be able to go to bed at the end of the day and know that I have done some good.  I want to make a difference to someone somehow.

I am not old, I am not young.

I am not beautiful by society's standards, yet I am not homely.

I am not an idiot.  I will probably never be a rocket scientist. 

I am not poor, I am not weatlhy -- I am comfortable.

I am not the best Mom in the world, but I am definitely not the worst.

I realize that you can't possibly be perfect in every area and that you don't have to be in order to be effective.

At times in my life I feel like I have tried to please too many people and in the process have pleased no one, but have still worn myself out trying and have nothing to show for it.

I hear people say that it is "THEIR time in life" or that they are going to start taking care of themselves.  I want to be happy by knowing I've made a difference.  Is that so bad?  I don't want to be taken advantage of, nor do I want to feel like I am being selfish.

I am on a quest to find a balance. 

I said earlier that I felt as if I had a full time job now and am moonlighting as a Mom.  Balance is a difficult thing to achieve. 

When you are in the early stages of development of something new, other things get neglected.  I am learning my new job, so please don't look too close at the carpet or the dirty dishes in the sink for now.
